Universal truths

There's an episode of Friends that largely revolves around the idea that all straight men have one fantasy in common: Princess Leia in the gold bikini from Return of the Jedi.

Travis and most of my male friends have confirmed that this is indeed hot.

Cut to today, where I had my last 8th grade English class of the year. I should explain that these kids in particular are kind of my babies. I taught them in grade 7 and I will dearly miss teaching them next year. Anyway, they have worked hard all year long. We had so much to get through that we didn't have a lot of time for lazy days where we played games or watched movies. Because of this, I decided to let them watch a movie at the end of the year.

Monday we watched most of The Truman Show, which I find to be a highly underrated, fantastic film that lends itself to some great discussion about ethics, freedom, social contract theory, etc. We finished the last half hour of the movie today, and then had another 45 or so minutes to kill before the end of the school day.

"Mrs. Erin, I have movies," one of the boys told me.

Hmm...well, might as well check them out. The DVDs he had with him ranged from Garfield: the Movie to Judge Dredd and everything in between.

"White Girls! Let's watch White Girls!" the kids insisted.

Uh...no.

"Star Wars, Mrs. Erin?" one boy suggested.

"Old or new?" I asked.

"Old, lah!"

"Good boy. Which one?"

There was a pause, then an emphatic, "Return of the Jedi!!!"

OK. Well, there were 40 minutes left of the entire academic year for these kids. I never let my classes have free time; I opt for English-improving games or study time instead. Plus...Star Wars? What's not to like?

About 20 minutes into the movie, it became quite apparent why Return of the Jedi was chosen.

BOOBIES!!!!

*snicker snicker snicker*

The allure of Princess Leia in the gold bikini transcends cultures as well as generations.

Ah, the brotherhood of man.

I have silent reading time in my classroom every Thursday for 15 minutes. There's this WEIRD kid that I can never get to be quiet, and he was actually quiet during our last silent reading time of the year. I figured he must have a great book, so I went to his desk to look at it. I discovered that he was staring at a picture of Princess Leia in that dumb gold bikini instead of reading. I know I'm a girl and all, but I just don't see the appeal.
