Just when I think things can't get any weirder...

There are swans in our neighborhood now. Four of them. I have no idea who they belong to, but here they are. This afternoon we saw them taking a stroll down the street, just hanging out. Tonight, when we returned home from a friend's house, we saw them sleeping in someone's driveway, not really near where they were wandering earlier. Hmm. I guess as long as they don't have loud parties, they'll be nice enough neighbors.

There's also apparently a loose monkey in the area. There's a little kiosk a few blocks away that sells snacks, drinks and a few other random things. Right next to the kiosk is a big banana stand, and logically next to the banana stand is a family of monkeys. The two big monkeys aren't free to run, normally, they're attached somehow to their little monkey house and play area they have between these two big trees. They recently had a baby monkey, and it's extremely cute, though mama monkey doesn't like it if people get too close. Travis went to the kiosk the other day to pick up some eggs and Coke and he said one of the adult monkeys had gotten loose and was being chased by some local men. These men had no hope, though, for the monkey was long gone. So now our neighborhood has a rogue monkey AND swans.

In weird domestic animal news, Beans (our cat) continues to be less and less normal. His new favorite thing to attack is our big TV downstairs in the living room. No matter where he is in the house, when he hears it turn off he comes racing. He loves swatting at the screen with his paws. He loves the crackly static electricity, and he bats at the screen until it stops crackling. Weirdo. The static makes his fur stand up. It'll be fun when we take him back to the States...there's no dry season here like there is at home, it's always humid. The static electricity that builds up during the winter in the midwest will be fun for Beans, I'm sure. Crackly kitty.

We just got the new expatriate teachers moved in this week. There are eight of them, and they seem pretty cool thus far. We've been trying to relax a little this week, as we head back to meetings next week before school starts up again Aug. 1, but it hasn't worked too well. Our roof is getting worked on, so we've woken up to construction noises rather early each day. We've also been temporarily moved out of our bedroom into one of the other upstairs rooms, so the ceiling in our bedroom can be fixed.

This was one occasion when it was good to have a maid-she and a guy from school moved all of the furniture in our bedroom (except a huge closet) into the larger of the two spare bedrooms upstairs and set it all up like we had it in the other room. Very nice. Funny story about this spare bedroom...

This is the room Kristin stayed in when she visited in June. In preparation for her arrival, we had the ceiling of the room painted a violent school bus yellow. Mostly just because we could. Paint costs nothing here, as does hiring a guy to paint for the day. The guy we hired had painted the rest of our interior for us, and had always made comments on how pretty the paint colors we chose were. He said nothing about the yellow, but did look at us as though we'd lost our minds. To make the room even lovelier for Miss Bork, we bought a can of glow-in-the-dark spray paint and went to town painting messges to her on the ceiling and walls. We have now spent the last week basking in our lovely "decor," sleeping in a day-glo room with "WELCOME TO INDONESIA BORK!!!" and other such sentiments all over. Nice. Reap what you sow, I guess...
