The pitter-patter of little feet

Today we got some great news!

No, we aren't having a baby. The only little feet we'll be having in our house for the next few years are those of our four-legged furry "children."

The little feet in question are those of our friends' little guy, Leo. Leo belongs to Jan-Mark and Angela, two of our coworkers and friends. They have been in the process of adopting him for the last year and a half.

They started "fostering" Leo in June of 2005, after already having gone through years of long, drawn-out processes. It's incredibly difficult for foreigners to legally adopt Indonesian children. Many just go the illegal, money under the table route, but then their kids can't be citizens of the parents' home country.

Today they had their final court date (which, in Indonesia, could have been pushed back for months or years...so we were all praying and hoping for them) and now Leo is theirs! Officially, finally, absolutely theirs. Much hugging and crying and celebrating ensued.

I can't imagine the relief they must feel. It was always too scary to think about the fact that there was a chance he would never be legally theirs, because one never knows what will happen whendealing with the fun that is Indonesian bureaucracy.

Thank God, though, all went well. We went over to their place after school to celebrate, and watched Leo toddle around the room, babbling and smiling his toothy, dimpled grin. What a great family they make.

I can't stop smiling!
