Slacking off
Today my seventh grade history class and I were doing a worksheet on Renaissance clothing styles. They were to read an article about the clothing styles and then read a list of articles of clothing, circling the items that were probably worn during the Renaissance. One item listed was this: slacks.
For those of you who aren't aware, the word "slacks" is one of my least favorite things ever. I HATE THAT WORD. I don't know why, I just hate it. A lot. Anyway, it's apparently an American-English word, and the kids didn't know what it meant. The following is what happened:
ME: Any other questions?
7th GRADER: Mrs. Erin! What is slacks?!
ME (making a face): Um, pants. Slacks are pants.
About 10 7th graders: Mrs. Erin, why are you making that face? Don't you like slacks?
This led to a confession. Mrs. Erin hates the word slacks. Doesn't know why, just does. They thought it was HILARIOUS. Work did get done during the rest of the period, but there was much whispering of "slacks!" all throughout. By the time the bell rang, we were all on the verge of one big giggle fit. It was great. I completely enjoyed myself, and I think the kids did, too. It wasn't our most productive day, but it was a good bonding time.
So we missed Halloween! No trick-or-treaters around here, but we did watch a scary movie with the Hansons Sunday afternoon. We watched the Japanese film Ju-on, which has been remade and just released in the US as The Grudge. The Japanese version is pretty darn creepy, if not a little random and hard to follow. Still, there are plenty of possessed, undead little Japanese kids making terrifying back-of-the-throat croaking noises. It didn't seem too horribly scary at the time, but when it came time to get into bed....eek! Of course, most of our students have seen this movie and of course, Kale encouraged all of the ones he taught today to make the creepy throat noises as they passed Travis and I in the hall. And, of course, the kids were more than happy to oblige. It was pretty funny.
Not sure about this teaching thing still-at this point I am definitely not making a career of it! But after days like today, I'm awfully glad I get to try it for a little while. Kids.
One more thing...it's November! I can officially say this now: I'm going home next month! Hooray! Let it snow! Once we've safely landed in Omaha, that is.
