Baby, it's cold outside

But not too cold, or so this is what the locals tell us. It's been unseasonably warm here in Nebraska the last few days...like, 40 degrees Fahrenheit, which is still freezing cold to those of us used to the tropics! But the weather has been nice and mild.

It's been very good to be back after having been gone for an entire year. Our families and our doggie were very happy to see us (and we them), and our dog still gets overly excited when he sees us. It's like he remembers all over again that his people are home. "Yay! You guys! HI! Throw my ball for me!" I was afraid he'd forget us after so long, and not remember he was our dog. Yeah, not a problem. He's still definitely our baby.

Our trip was long but mostly uneventful. Even the longest flight, the marathon 12-hour Hong Kong to San Francisco trip, wasn't terrible. Our seats were decent (as decent as can be expected in economy class) and all of our luggage showed up both at San Francisco AND Omaha, which is more than we can say for our trip last year.

Our layover in Chicago was miserable. There was a ton of snow on the ground and we landed at 5:30 in the morning, so it was freezing cold. We trekked all the way through the American Airlines terminal at O'Hare (a loooong way) and ended up at some stupid little tiny waiting area. Our last flight was on American Eagle, and our plane was one of those teensy planelets-the kind where you're worried you might have to flap to get the thing off the ground. The gate was freezing because doors kept being opened and shut, and snow would blow in and we could see our breath. NOT ideal for two kids sans winter coats who just came from near the Equator. We shivered pathetically for three hours, then finally got on the last flight home.

We've mostly recovered from jet lag by now, though we are suffering teensy bouts of culture shock here and there. There is so much I'd forgotten, or gotten used to being different. I stood in the grocery store like an idiot yesterday, staring in wonder and adoration at the Campbell's soup aisle...hundreds of kinds of soup! Shelves and rows! None of them selling for $5 a can like in Indonesia! Amazing... The culture shock isn't bad, mostly just amusing, but I can't even imagine how it's going to be adjusting to living here whenever we do move back.

It is awfully nice to be here now, though. I've especially enjoyed driving-something I don't do in Indoneisa because a) I can't drive a manual transmission and b) I'm not insane enough to take on Jakarta traffic...and Travis is! I've even remembered which side of the road to drive on so far.

The weather here is nice now, but I'm crossing my fingers it'll snow before the 24th, just enough for the ground to be white and pretty. I don't need a blizzard, just enough snow to play in before we head back in January!

Hope everyone has a wonderful, blessed Christmas. Selamat Natal!
