Carry each other

Everyone knows what today is.

Everyone remembers. Some more than others, I know. I remember like it was yesterday, but it wasn't. Thank God.

Five years have gone by since September 11, 2001. From the second I turned on CNN this morning, it was apparent that today was going to be a day of memorials, of remembering. That's good. We can't forget, not ever.

What surprised me, though I suppose it shouldn't, was that today is also a good day to really push those political agendas across. Shots came from both sides of the spectrum, from far left to far right.

Either way, no matter where your political alliances lie, that's a pretty cheap shot.

Five years ago today, even if only for a brief time, we were all just Americans. That's what today should be. The memories of those who died should not be used as pawns or as leverage in the game of politics, not today.

For one day, we should all just be able to set differences aside and say hey-something horrible happened. Whatever your views, that's inarguable: people died, people got hurt, that's sad. It's simple. Let's just remember that today, and we can go back to drawing lines tomorrow.

I don't really care if this sounds hopeful and idealistic. That's fine. What else do we have to cling to but hope?
