Open a can of...

This afternoon we drove into Jakarta to check out a few new places. We went to a new mall, Senayan City, which is located across from another mall we frequent, Plaza Senayan. Plaza Senayan is located behind Ratu Plaza, the mall where we buy DVDs, and both are located just down the street from Sudirman Place, another big, brand new mall.

Jakarta needs more malls, people.

Anyway, Senayan City is quite posh. It has a Krispy Kreme and a Dairy Queen (OK, so not all of the mall is posh) and dozens of high-end shops. I threw a pretend hissy fit when I noticed that the Versace shop wasn't open yet. Hello?! Where am I supposed to shop?! Fine, I'll just go to Gucci. Whatever.

We strolled around and checked things out, stopping to purchase a baby gift for some friends who are adopting a little baby girl. We bought her a ridiculously impractical little dress, white linen with dainty little pink and yellow flowers embroidered along the edge of the collar and skirt. SO cute, so absolutely begging to be spit up on, but hey-her parents can buy her practical things. We also got her some little finger puppets (not for her to wear, obviously, but to look at while someone else wears) and a little rubber duckie. We considered a tiny plastic, quite realistic-looking, toy moose as her parents are Canadian, but decided it looked more pointy than fun.

We drove around the block to Sudirman Place, a mall which opened about six months ago but for some reason hasn't seen a lot of traffic. In the basement of the mall is a fantastic western grocery store/restaurant, Bali Deli. Their stock is mostly imported, so you can find everything from $5 Velveeta Shells and Cheese to $50 white truffle oil.

It also sells, as we discovered tonight, cans of Smac.

The only thing Travis and I were able to deduce is that a can of Smac is what you open up if the situation doesn't quite call for opening a can of Whoop-ass, but definitely calls for something more than a can of, say, Self-righteous Snit. It's Whoop-ass lite, if you will.

I think it comes in meat paste form. Awesome.

We're officially out of school for two whole weeks-our quarter break combined with the Idul Fitri holiday. We aren't taking any big trips; we're just bumming around Bogor and Jakarta and the house. I am definitely looking forward to sleeping as much as I can. I'm going to Shanghai, China, for five days at the end of the break, for a middle school humanities teacher conference, so that will be fun. Get your orders for Chairman Mao paraphernalia in now!
