I'm dreaming of a white Christmas...but I suppose sand will suffice

*I found canned pumpkin in Jakarta today! I'd looked everywhere for it and was starting to resign myself to a Christmas without pumpkin pie. Luckily, that need not be. Time for pie!

*Yesterday, leaving a fancy mall in Jakarta, I saw a woman get out of a taxi wearing skintight, see-through white cotton leggings. Under said leggings? Red and black granny undies--a fashion statement with all the subtlety of a smack upside the head. I glanced over at our driver, who had clearly seen the woman and was rather embarrassed. "If you wear white pants, you cannot wear colored underwear," I solemnly informed him, silently congratulating myself on being able to convey that in Indonesian. He burst out laughing and replied, in Indonesian," Jakarta is a big city. It takes many kinds of people." Indeed it does.

*Speaking of taking all kinds, we saw two drag queens today. They were fabulously festive, on many levels. Some Indonesian drag queens are called banci, and they occasionally sing and dance on the street for money. These particular drag queens made our nervous driver giggle a lot.

*We bought a little digital video camera today! Now we can film our exciting life and e-mail video clips home. I suppose the next step is getting an exciting life.

*We leave for Bali tomorrow, for six days and five nights. It'll probably be our last trip to Bali before we move home, unless we go for a quick trip over a long weekend. It isn't home, but I suppose if we can't be surrounded by our families, friends and snow over the holidays then the beach will just have to do.
