Abe Lincoln

Today while I was at our school's bank transferring some money and doing other general banking stuff, I saw a curious sight. Sitting on the bank lady's desk was a five dollar bill face down. I stared at it for quite a while and realized this was the first time since July that I had seen a five dollar bill. It was weird. I asked if I could see it because it looked fake. I had to hold it up to the light to look for the little security strip because I was positive that this was a counterfeit bill.

It wasn't.

I couldn't believe it. It had been so long since I'd seen one, I actually thought it was a fake! I don't know if it's because it was one of the old style bills with the small portrait, or just the fact that I've been used to dealing with this Monopoly cash they call currency here, but it was good to see one.

It was one of those strange sites here that make you miss things you'd forgotten about. The look and feel of a five dollar bill. Hershey's kisses. Little things like that. Last week, a kid in school was wearing a pair of Nebraska Cornhusker shorts. It was so strange to see those shorts on an Indonesian boy, apparently a friend gave them to him. But it was just another one of those familiar sights back home that, when you see them here, seem so out of place, you can't help but stare. The closer it gets to Christmas, the more things like that I remember and can't wait to see or have or eat.

It's bizzare to think that it's already November. Since there is no real weather changing difference to signal the passing of time, it's hard for me to figure out how long I've been here. There were no Halloween displays in any of the stores. I haven't seen anything about Christmas yet. Watching TV and movies make me miss things like crisp fall air. I enjoy the fact that it's November and I still have a pretty good tan, but I'm looking forward to coming home and freezing my ass off for a few weeks. After all, as far as the weather goes, I still think it's July.

Overall, I'd say I've adjusted here pretty well. I've enjoyed my time here. There are lots of things that I like and I know there will be stuff here that I miss when I leave, but I don't think this place will ever completely feel like home.
