Movin' on up

Today has been a fun Saturday for the Armknechts in Indonesia. It was our first Saturday with both satellite TV and a car!

We had Indovision installed yesterday, and now we have a lovely variety of channels to choose from: Discovery, Disney, CNN, CNBC, MTVAsia, HBO, Cinemax, E! and several others. Not only do we get to watch The Daily Show Global Edition AND Saturday Night Live on Saturday nights (SNL reruns, so I get my Jon Stewart and Jimmy Fallon fixes, yay!), we also get to watch American Idol. I shouldn't be so excited about something so superficial, but who cares! American Idol! And it's broadcast just a day later than it is in the US. Lovely. Now if we could just convince them to air the new CSI episodes and some Letterman, I'd be set. Ooh, and Trading Spaces. Um, and the Food Network, too. Gack, I'm a loser.

There are several Indonesian stations on Indovision, as well. Last night Travis and I watched The Price is Right on such a station. I laughed so hard I was afraid I'd injure myself. The show wasn't just a dubbed version of good ol' Bob Barker; it was a made-in-Indonesia version. I speak little Indonesian, but I noticed last night that you really don't need to speak much of any language to watch The Price is Right, so long as you understand the currency the prices are in! I was able to practice my Indonesian numbers and laugh myself sick. Even better-"Come on down!" is still yelled in English! Great, no?

We also had our first experience with our own car and driver today. Starting this week we're sharing a car with another family. On weekends and evenings after school, the car also comes with a driver. He's a great guy and a really good driver, but it's kind of hard for me to get used to someone waiting around for me just in case I feel like being driven somewhere. Of course, we will drive ourselves around in town, but it's going to be an adventure for a while. The car, a Toyota Kijang (an SUV-minivan sort of thing), is a manual transmission. I don't know how to drive one and Travis sort of does. We've entertained some security guards in our neighborhood just getting used to the car. Hey, at least we're fun!
