Changes
I hate change. In my brief 25 years, I've come to realize that I like things how they are and I don't like it when things get all different on me. In most cases, I get used to things and life is fine. I had a rough transition period from college to the real world and an even rougher transition from home to Indonesia. Both turned out more than fine.
The time has come for more change, and oh joy, it looks like it's going to be super-duper neato.
We're about to start in on our second academic year, and so far the only school-related thing I'm looking forward to is the students. If this past week's meetings are any indication, this year here might just be our last. Our department meetings have gone from a good mix of incredible productivity and comradeship to...Heaven help me. Last year, our language department meetings were an oasis from the epic suckiness that was all other meetings. Not anymore. Unless I learn to embrace being talked to as if I'm a five-year-old and having my every move monitored, I think this is one instance where I will not learn to like change.
The good news is, I'm so excited to teach my classes this year. The groups of students I'll be teaching are all pretty great kids, which will be a nice reprieve from last year's 11th graders. I like the subject material I'm teaching and I'm really looking forward to seeing the kids on Monday. I'm going to have to focus on how much I love my students and if all else fails, put on my blinders to the new irritations and just concentrate on teaching my kids.
Nothing else really new here in our neck of the jungle. I chose to unwind from my craptastic week by treating myself to a simultaneous pedicure and cream bath at the spa Friday afternoon. A cream bath was a new idea to me when I came here, and it has quickly become one of my favorite things. It involves a deep-conditioning treatment for your hair combined with a fantastic scalp, neck, shoulder and upper back massage. Get your tootsies buffed, massaged and polished at the same time and it's a beautiful thing...particularly when the bill plus tip comes to slightly over $10. My iPod, a birthday present from Travis, made a nice addition to the experience.
My iPod has been a definite saving grace this week. Earphones and loud music send very clear "LALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!" vibes, though unfortunately these were largely ignored by those they were meant to be sent to. Ah, well. Perhaps I'll steal a "Do Not Disturb" sign the next time I'm in a hotel and just try taping it to my face. That'll look pretty with my new uniform shirt!
