Gourdy

Some of our coworkers recently took a trip to Papua (not to be confused with Papua New Guinea, though it is on the same land mass), an Indonesian island. They were very nice and brought us back a souvenir...part of the traditional Papuan costume. The, ahem, MALE traditional Papuan costume. It's, er, gourd-tastic, and for the record, it is for WALL DECORATION ONLY in our house, thankyouverymuch.

Anyway, as you can see by the photo of the gourd, proudly displayed on a wall in our entryway, one end has some feathers sticking out. As you can see by the other photo, Beans thinks feathers=cat toy. He spent a good 30 minutes yowling angrily at the too-high-for-his-reach gourd before we distracted him with an actual cat toy...which yes, had feathers.

The gift was delivered to my classroom this afternoon by one of the thoughtful friends who brought it back to us. It was delivered in a plastic bag, but not all of it fit inside the bag. I tried to play it off, hoping the plethora of giggly girls in my 10th grade English class wouldn't catch on, but I must have turned the color of a fire engine.

"Mrs. Erin, tee hee hee hee, that's from Papua! Tee hee hee, that isn't Mr. Travis' costume for Indonesia Day, is it? Eeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Tee hee hee hee!"

I do not blush easily, but I was informed my face wasn't very white anymore. Thanks, ladies. No, Mr. Travis' wife insists on pants...or at least a long, traditional sarong. Moving on, ladies... Kids these days.
