I heart my iPod

One of my colleagues owes his life to my iPod today. If it weren't for the help of Dave Matthews, Bono and their respective bands, I might have heaved my desk across the room. Breathe, Erin, breathe...you can't be a good mom to your kitten and dachshund if you're in Indonesian prison for assault by use of office furniture...listen to the happy music...

In other news, I'm very excited for the month of August. August 18 is Indonesian Independence Day, so we get the day off, which is nice. More exciting, though, is August 31. That day we're having Indonesian Day at school. I'm on the committee to organize it, and it's actually a lot of fun. Each grade in the middle-senior school (7-12) is doing something special. I'm working with the seventh graders, since I teach them history. We'll be working with the 7th grade Bahasa Indonesia and English teachers, and our topic deals with Indonesian fables and ancient literature and legends. Very cool.

The best part, and I'm probably such a total nerd for getting so excited about this, is that all the teachers are supposed to wear traditional Indonesian costumes. Yay!!! This means Travis and I will be visiting a tailor and having gorgeous traditional costumes made for us. I think the women will probably get their hair and makeup done at school, too-this is what happened when they did Indonesian Day two years ago. I'm so excited! I can't wait to have my own, fancy traditional Indonesian costume. The women's costumes are kind of hard to walk in, women basically have to mince everywhere, but it's still very pretty and dainty...if a 5'10" white girl can be considered dainty. Hey, I'll try!

Here's one of the only decent links I could find with images of both men's and women's traditional dress: http://www.tirthabali.com/wedding_dress/folk_eng.html

The photos of traditional dress are Balinese wedding attire, apparently, but you get the idea. Very pretty stuff. Of course, several of the male teachers have offered to wear traditional Papuan costume...a g-string of sorts with a strategically placed, uh, gourd...but perhaps batik would be less traumatic for all involved. The Javanese traditional costumes are pretty, as well, and some I've seen are fairly similar to these Balinese ones. We'll probably get costumes similar to the ones you see in the smaller images, if you happen to check out the site. I'm so excited! It's very cool to learn more about this place, too. I've been working with Lisa, one of the national teachers. She's about the nicest person I've ever met, and she's been so cool to work with. Today she taught me a lot about Indonesian food when we were looking through potential catering menus. Very cool stuff indeed. We'll definitely email or post photos of us in costume after the big day! (That is, unless Travis decides to go Papuan.)
