Lobsteriffic

There is no end to the weird stuff one can find in Asia. (Though I suppose, to be fair, there is also no end to weird stuff one can find in America...hello, aerosol cheese, anyone? Brilliant!!!) When Travis and I were in Thailand, one of the fun purchases we made was a small bag of Grilled Lobster flavored Lay's potato chips. They had all kinds of weird flavors, but this one stuck out.

Lobster is OK. I'm not a seafood person, but I've been willing to eat my fair share here in the tropics. I draw the line at fish that can still look at me, but I've eaten barracuda and fresh tuna in Bali, and shrimp (prawns if you're an Aussie) and lobster caught just hours before at Pelabuhan Ratu's seaside resorts. When in Rome, I guess-and my experiences have been pleasant. Tuna steak is a good thing, as Martha would say, as is battered and fried barracuda with french fries-fish and chips. I didn't even mind the prawns or the lobster. I've eaten at Red Lobster before...but mostly after I turned 21 because I wanted to order a Lobsterita (ginormous margarita, NOT lobster flavored, I recommend the peach kind) so I could get the Mardi Gras beads with a plastic lobster attached. Lobster potato chips, um...no. I ate dill pickle flavored chips at home once, tried a few with Travis and Nate and Alli, then let Nate finish the bag. Fish and chips means FISH AND FRIES, PEOPLE!

Anyway, after a considerable amount of a lovely dry white wine, a group of us decided that we'd try these lobster chips tonight. "OK, I'll eat one, but you have to do it, too! At the same time!" we all said. After thoughtfully chewing what was arguably the strangest thing I've eaten in a long time (and I live in Asia, people), I made the decision to neve EVER eat lobster potato chips again. Ever. Ack. Fishy aftertaste is never good, let alone when you're talking about a POTATO CHIP. Barbecue, people. Maybe get a little crazy and try the salt and vinegar ones that smell like mayonnaise. But lobster...no. Here in Indonesia we can find chicken flavored chips, and barbecued beef flavored chips. I like these things in their actual form, but...look, people, if it has legs, it does not a potato chip flavor make.
